T&D Europe launches study on grid digitalisation

As we accelerate toward a net-zero future, the energy trilemma—affordability, resilience, and sustainability—remains the compass guiding every policy decision. But the terrain has changed. Today’s electricity grid is no longer a one-way street. It’s becoming a dynamic, bidirectional ecosystem powered by renewables, distributed energy resources, and increasingly active consumers—“flexumers.” This transformation demands more than just new infrastructure; it calls for a fundamental rethinking of how we regulate and manage the grid.

Digital grid technologies are key to unlocking new grid functionalities essential for operating the grid under these new conditions. But if we continue to evaluate tomorrow’s grid with yesterday’s regulations and performance considerations, we risk sidelining the very innovations we need to accelerate the energy transition.

What is required to digitalise the grid? How can a digital grid support stakeholders such as regulators in balancing the elements of the energy transition? What could change in regulation?

T&D has commissioned a study from Compass Lexecon to analyse the regulatory issues around the deployment of digitalised solutions in the European power network sector and how they can be unlocked.
