Meet our members: FEDET

T&D Europe’s mission is to represent the views of Europe’s grid technology providers at EU level, supporting the energy transition and drive for climate-neutrality by 2050. This is only possible with the help and support of our members. A very good reason to get to know them better!

We spoke with Henry Lootens, Project Manager at the Transmissie & Distributiesystemen (T&D) section of FEDET, and member of T&D Europe’s Executive Committee, to find out more about FEDET and his thoughts on the role of the transmission and distribution sector in Europe.

Introduction

The Transmissie & Distributiesystemen (T&D) section of FEDET is dedicated to supporting the infrastructure of electricity transmission and distribution within the Netherlands. This sector plays a crucial role in advancing the energy transition, particularly concerning medium and high-voltage networks. FEDET’s T&D section collaborates closely with network operators to maximise the current grid’s capacity and ensure future expansions are both feasible and affordable, addressing the challenges of decentralisation, digitalisation, and decarbonisation in line with Dutch climate goals.

Key initiatives include:

  1. Shore Side Electricity (SSE): This project, also called “walstroom,” aims to supply docked ships with electric power from the shore, reducing pollution, noise, and vibrations in urban ports.
  2. Future Distribution Grids: As part of the digital and flexible energy transition, FEDET works on developing advanced grids that can adapt to fluctuating renewable energy sources and manage data effectively.

FEDET’s T&D section is also actively engaged with T&D Europe to coordinate efforts across EU nations, ensuring policy alignment and knowledge sharing within the industry.

Who are your members and what is your mission?

FEDET is the advocate of and for entrepreneurs in the electrical and installation technology sector. We bundle the interests and insights of our members, active in Industry, Construction and Infrastructure and Energy. You can see our members here.

What drove you to become a member of T&D Europe? How does T&D Europe help your company to achieve your goals and support your  mission?

We can categorise support from T&D Europe under the four following pillars.

  1. Policy influence and advocacy: As an EU-level association, T&D Europe provides a platform for national associations like FEDET T&D to influence European energy policy. By being part of T&D Europe, FEDET can directly engage in shaping regulations and standards that impact energy transmission and distribution across Europe. This connection enables FEDET to anticipate regulatory changes and advocate for policies that align with the interests of Dutch T&D stakeholders.
  2. Knowledge and best practice sharing: Through T&D Europe, FEDET T&D gains access to knowledge, technical expertise, and best practices from across member states. This is particularly valuable in areas like grid digitalisation, decarbonisation, and circular economy initiatives. Collaboration on these topics helps FEDET adopt innovative practices and technical solutions that are essential for advancing the energy transition in the Netherlands.
  3. Alignment on sustainability goals: EU policies on decarbonisation and renewable energy are foundational for T&D activities. By working with T&D Europe, FEDET aligns with European sustainability objectives, ensuring that Dutch energy infrastructure supports the EU’s net-zero ambitions. This partnership also supports initiatives like standardized material passports and circular economy practices, positioning the Netherlands as a leader in sustainable T&D technology.
  4. Support for Dutch T&D companies: Many FEDET T&D member companies operate internationally, making European market insights and policy coordination crucial. T&D Europe helps ensure that Dutch T&D companies are competitive and compliant across EU markets, facilitating smoother cross-border operations and market expansion

What do you see as the biggest challenge for the T&D sector in Europe today?

Keeping the industry here. And also being able to deliver what we promise.

Where do you see grid technology providers making a difference in addressing these challenges?

With standarisation (Europe wide) and keeping policymakers involved in our work.
