The European industry is making major efforts in ramping up its capacity to meet growing demand for transmission and distribution technology. A survey of public announcements of T&D Europe’s 11 corporate members in the past 12 months shows a total investment of more than €9 billion in expanding global manufacturing capacity.
Europe’s T&D industry is investing
T&D Europe, representing the providers of electricity transmission and distribution technology in Europe, has conducted a survey of public announcements in the period June 2024 – May 2025 of T&D Europe’s 11 corporate members; ABB, Eaton, Ganz, GE Vernova, Hitachi Energy, Kyte PowerTech, Ormazabal, R&S, Schneider Electric, Siemens and Siemens Energy.
The companies have announced investments in expanding and modernising factories to help address the critical shortage of transformers, manufacturing gas-insulated lines (GIL) and components for gas-insulated switchgear (GIS).
The announced investments are made across Europe, including places such as Brno (Czechia), Frankfurt (Germany), Tápiószele and Dunavecse (Hungary), Cavan (Ireland), Cordoba, Igorre and Zaragoza (Spain), Ludvika (Sweden) and Newcastle (United Kingdom). The investments of companies that are not corporate members of T&D Europe, or companies that are not members of T&D Europe or one of the national associations, are not included in this survey. This means that the total investment figure will be higher. For example, the French T&D industry, represented by Gimelec are investing €560 million, which would lead to a doubling of manufacturing capacity in France by 2030.
T&D industry in Europe
The survey covers a part of the European T&D industry. According to the latest count, T&D Europe, through its national associations, represents more than 600 companies with more than 450 factories across the continent, employing more than 175,000 people.
The good news is that Europe is home to a world-leading transmission and distribution technology sector, providing modern, digital, and innovative solutions for the energy system of today and tomorrow, based on an electricity backbone. The strength of the sector lies in the combination of multinational corporations and specialised SMEs. Together they form a strong industrial base in Europe, which needs to be preserved and strengthened.
