T&D Europe welcomes the Commission's Offshore Renewable Energy Strategy, presented on Thursday by Vice-President Timmermans and Energy Commissioner Simson.
Increasing the production of offshore renewable energy is an important step to making Europe the first climate-neutral continent in the world. Bringing renewable electricity from the offshore wind farms to Europe’s households and industry will require major investments in electricity networks, especially multi-terminal HVDC to connect hybrid offshore wind farms with consumers.
Direct Current technologies for grid, such as High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converters and systems, can efficiently convey huge amounts of offshore renewable energy to land, enabling the seamless integration of high shares of renewables.
“Today’s strategy has the potential to make Europe’s Man on the Moon Moment tangible by ensuring that Europe will be home to the world’s first commercial, multinational, multi-terminal, multi-vendor HVDC project”, said T&D Europe Secretary General Diederik Peereboom.
To allow Europe’s clean energy sector to meet this challenge EU support is essential by providing a clear and supportive legal framework, mobilise all relevant funds and strengthen the supply chain.
Building on today’s strategy T&D Europe sees as a next step the funding of a multi-terminal, multi-vendor HVDC project with fast-track regulatory and financial instruments, giving the possibility to manufacturers, wind developers and transmission system operators to collect experience and establish best practices in the design process of such projects/systems.
T&D Europe is ready to deliver on this major challenge together with policy-makers, regulators, system operators and wind developers.
